Adult Blood Culture Collection

Description

The content within this course was developed by the Division of Laboratory Systems (DLS), in collaboration with the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP).  This activity is designed to increase knowledge and competency for adult blood culture collection to promote best practices and improve the laboratory diagnosis of bloodstream infections.

Audience

This course is intended for laboratorians, physicians, registered nurses, and other health care professionals, developed by a multidisciplinary team to include both clinical care and clinical laboratory considerations.

Objectives

At the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe the step-by-step procedure for collecting blood cultures.
  • Explain the rationale for each step of the blood culture collection process.
  • Identify best practices for blood culture collection.
  • Describe the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in blood culture collection.

To receive Continuing Medical Education (CME), Continuing Nursing Education (CNE), or Continuing Education Units (CEU), follow the steps below by June 20, 2027.

1. Complete the course in OneLab REACH.      
2. Pass the posttest at 80%.      
3. Copy the passcode provided after passing the posttest.      
4. Go to CDC TRAIN and register for the Adult Blood Culture Collection (Web-Based) - WB4940 - CDC TRAIN - an affiliate of the TRAIN Learning Network powered by the Public Health Foundation
5. Check the box for each type of CE you wish to apply for when registering for the course.      
6. Select the **Mark Completed** button on the course page in TRAIN.      
7. Enter the passcode when prompted.      
8. Complete the evaluation in CDC TRAIN.
