Event Description
There are approximately 2,000 travel-related cases of malaria in the US each year. Rapid diagnosis of malaria is crucial to initiate appropriate treatment since uncomplicated malaria can rapidly progress to a life-threatening disease. This webinar introduces learners to the biology of malaria parasites, provides instructions for preparing and examining blood smears to detect malaria, and highlights the role of rapid diagnostic tests. During this webinar, participants will expand their expertise in examining blood smears, helping ensure rapid malaria diagnosis, which can impact patient management.
Event Objectives
After completing this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify educational and other resources available through the OneLab Network
- Describe the life cycles of Plasmodium spp.
- Describe how to prepare and stain thin and thick blood smears
- Identify key diagnostic features of Plasmodium spp. in blood smears
- Explain how rapid diagnostic tests can augment blood smear examinations
